In the later Edo Period 19th century, people began to feel a strong desire to learn more about animals from other places. This started with a book, Theatrum Universale Omnium Animalium written by a scholar named JONSTON, in which animals, birds, fish, and insects ware carved in detail on copper plate. The illustrations ware frequently quoted in books of Rangaku ("Western learning")and its influence on the intellectuals of that time was immense.
