Bookbinding Exhibition & Workshop

Jul. 23, 2003 (Wed) - Sep. 26, 2003 (Fri)
10:00 - 18:00

This summer, the basement-level Main Exhibits Room features an exhibition of book design from Czechoslovakia, where for the first time in Europe the binding was used as an artistic rendering of a book's contents. In connection, the 1st floor P&P Gallery will hold an exhibition on general book construction.

A comparison of the familiar printed matter we see everyday, such as books and magazines, reveals that there are many ways to bind the same book. This exhibition will explain how books familiar to all of us are constructed, along with the historical background of the age in which particular books were made.

During the exhibition, a museum curator will be on hand to explain how books are made whilst creating simple books. In addition, a bookbinding instructor will be invited to hold workshops on the various kinds of bookmaking methods, including the differences between Western- and Japanese-style bookbinding. Both the exhibition and workshop will deepen participants' understanding of the close relation between printing and binding. Please take the opportunity this summer to visit our gallery with your family to experience the world of bookmaking.
