A Message from the Director

Welcome to The Galaxy of Letterpress

Fonts that are still all around us to this day. Like a paintbrush that is used to express a person's emotions, they are a part of our daily communications. Did you know that those fonts have their origins in European moveable type?
In the past, letters were printed using a kind of stamp called a moveable type. Manufacturers designed a countless number of European moveable type styles, and packaged, uniform types were sold under the name "fonts".
This exhibition likens the European moveable types available some 100 years ago during the mechanical industry era to the stars of our galaxy. Just as there is an order to the celestial bodies of the Milky Way, there is a classification to the countless number of moveable types, and each has a background of being born in a kind of industry.
In addition to the large number of European moveable types, visitors can experience the significance of fonts through the tools, machinery, and books of the era.
And in closing, I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to Masao Takaoka of Kazui Press and all those who offered their cooperation in this exhibit.
