Born in 1963, Kyogoku Natsuhiko made a debut as a novelist with his work The Summer of the Ubume in 1994. Since then, he earned numerous literary and other awards, including the 49th Mystery Writers of Japan Award in the novel category for Moryo no Hako in 1996, the 25th Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature for Warau Iemon in 1997, the 8th Kuwasawa Award in 2000, the 16th Yamamoto Shugoro Prize for Nozoki Koheiji in 2003, the 130th Naoki Prize for Nochi no Kosetsu Hyaku Monogatari in 2004, the 24th Shibata Renzaburo Award for Nishi no Kosetsu Hyaku Monogatari in 2011, and the 56th Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Toku no Kosetsu Hyaku Monogatari in 2022.
