Complexity and Simplicity: Jōmon and Yayoi DNA in Japanese Package Design

Aug. 7, 2021 (Sat) - Oct. 3, 2021 (Sun)
10:00 - 18:00

This exhibition looks at the unique characteristics and rich diversity of Japanese package design by seeking its roots in Jōmon and Yayoi earthenware.

Package design in Japan ranges from the simplest to the most elaborate, whether it is timeless, contemporary, or as traditional as a furoshiki cloth or noshi envelope. The essence of Japanese package design can be traced back to the distinctive earthenware respectively produced by the prehistoric Jōmon and Yayoi cultures.
Using the iconic Jōmon and Yayoi designs as points of reference, this exhibition looks at the breadth and depth of Japanese packaging through some 140 product packages organized under the five themes of Beauty, Cuteness, Functionality, Allure and Character—qualities considered key to the uniqueness of Japanese package design.
This exhibition is held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Japan Package Design Association (JPDA).

*Please note that the exhibition might be cancelled or postponed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Please also kindly understand that admission to the event may be restricted even if the exhibition is held as scheduled.
