A Message from the Director
The Origin of Anpanman
Anpanman is familiar to everyone. This year marks 50 years since Anpanman first appeared in 1973 in the monthly subscription picture book “Kinder Ohanashi Ehon” (published by Froebel-Kan). This exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the character’s debut and attempts to rediscover the origin of Anpanman.
Over time, Anpanman has expanded into various media, including TV and movies. We aspire to return to the starting point of the superhero, the world of picture books.
The origin of picture books is original pictures drawn by creators. Among the exhibits are elaborate reproductions of Yanase Takashi’s originals to help visitors to get to know about the birth of Anpanman. It all started with a single original picture. Originals were printed and compiled into picture books, which were then passed on to the hands of many children. Another highlight of the exhibits is today’s artistic printing techniques that have allowed for the recreation of original’s delicate touches and vivid colors.
I believe that many Japanese discovered Anpanman in picture books in their childhoods. Some adults may feel nostalgia for Anpanman by reading their children the picture books. We hope that our visitors recollect fond memories of their childhood by reuniting with the Anpanman in their heart at this exhibition.
Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all those who cooperated with us in organizing this event.
