In the 1960s, Japan moved from an era of postwar reconstruction into one of high economic growth. It was during this decade that the foundations of the Japanese economy of today were put into place. Economic growth brought a flood of commodities and information in daily life. Eager to make themselves visible and distinct, companies began to rely heavily on graphic design to create their own brand images. According to the dictionary Kojien, graphic design is primarily "a design to transmit visual information through printing." Just as graphic design was being widely adopted for the transmittal of visual information, the printing medium and printing technology were diversifying and rapidly progressing.

At this two-part exhibition, divided into the Early Term and Later Term, we will look back on the development of industry, printing technology and the graphic design in the 1960s, when design began to filter into people's lives.
