Look, touch, and realize

Industrial designers have been steadfastly introducing Universal Design (UD) and growing it as a field for the last fifteen years. UD goes beyond the elimination of inconvenience. The aim is to bring pleasant experience to people of every kind.

Social challenges such as falling birthrates and the `graying` of populations around the world compel us to open up new frontiers for barrier-free design in our cities as we approach 2020. The conditions of the new century come hand in hand with new design goals. Globalization increases the diversity of the people living in and moving through the world's major cities, requiring designs that adapt to people more universally. Meanwhile, environmental catastrophes brought by climate change have the potential to radically change the settings in which designs are used. Our perspectives on UD and approaches to UD development will branch out and deepen as we move forward.
This exhibition will explore the problem-solving methods in the world of design with a focus on Japan's near future.
