Progress and Enlightenment in the Business World

Publications from the Collection of the Printing Museum, Tokyo

Jan. 19, 2010 (Tue) - Apr. 18, 2010 (Sun)
10:00 - 18:00 (final admission: 17:30)

The Printing Museum, Tokyo is proud to present items from its collection in a series of exhibitions which will change every 3 or 4 months over a period of some one and a half years until 2011. You will surely marvel at the treasures on display in each of these unique exhibitions.

We have selected materials that are connected with the changes occurring in the fields of economics and commerce as Edo transformed itself into Tokyo.
After the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese set about borrowing a multitude of systems and technology from the West in an effort to modernize the country. Economic theories developed in England were sometimes introduced by way of woodblock printed books, and there also appeared many colored woodblock prints that conveyed information concerning industries that flourished during that time.

As further advances were made in the fields of commerce and industry, the recording of transactions in ledgers also changed with the introduction of the Western system of double entry bookkeeping, which is still vital in today's business world.
Economics in today's world can be traced back to the printed works in this exhibition, which brings the businessmen of 100 years ago to life.
