Third Exhibition
Creative Plate-making
Publications from the Collection of the Printing Museum, Tokyo
Apr. 20, 2010 (Tue) - Jul. 3, 2010 (Sat)
10:00 - 18:00 (final admission: 17:30)
The Printing Museum, Tokyo is proud to present items from its collection in a series of exhibitions which will change every 3 or 4 months over a period of some one and a half years until 2011. You will surely marvel at the treasures on display in each of these unique exhibitions.
The printing process itself was used as a tool in the creation of graphic designs in the 60s and 70s, when the art of photoengraving was in full flower. Artists at the time "used" printing in the same way that they used their brushes and pens. By using screens that they made themselves and changing the method of transferring film to printing plates, the artists were able to create new kinds of images, ones that owed their development to specific changes in the plate-making or photographing process. With today's computer graphics it might seem that such images would be easy to create, but actually there are many extremely difficult barriers that would need to be overcome in order to reproduce these works from the 60s and 70s accurately. The exhibition features many of the experiments in graphic design from that time when artists were intimately involved in the printing process.
