The American (or bald) eagle and Uncle Sam were frequently depicted as the traditional symbols of America on these posters in order to foster identity and fellow feeling. This was an era of significant technological progress in terms of lithographic printing as posters evolved from hand-drawn to photomechanical processes.

This exhibition introduces American society in the years heading into the war, poster artists, and printing techniques through the collection of posters owned by the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies.
