On exhibit

1871

No. 21115

A best-selling enlightenment book in the Meiji era that stressed the importance of learning and education. This material which is the first edition seems to be printed with the use of metal engraving movable types. However, on the occasion of reprint, movable-types printing could not keep up with publishing, so after that printing method returned to wood-block printing. In addition, it became extremely popular in those days, and a lot of reproductions by wood-block printing were sold. This led to the later enactment of the Copyright Act.
