This is a booklet published by Motoki Shozo for his students at the Shinmachi letterpress printing office he established in Nagasaki. This booklet features samples of movable types, and also the “Ming typeface” which is the current major typeface for text. The movable types were cast with the use of a matrix which he made with electroforming learned from William Gamble based on primarily movable-types of the Shanghai American Presbyterian Mission Press as the original. This is the first sample advertisement of cast metal types in Japan and a material informed serious introduction of European-style typography.
